Zippy in the mists of time

This is my September 2026 #Emacs Carnival entry. Back in the mists of time, there was Zippy the Pinhead. For a while, zippy quotes were included as part of emacs, but they were not free, so they were removed.

Here, to help you “understand” Zippy are a couple of the comic strips Zippy One Zippy Two, but “understand” is the exactly the wrong word when it comes to Zippy.

Now, add to that even less context. Just the text of random zippy quotes and you’ve got … well, you tell me what you’ve got?

The last thing that happens in my emacs startup config displays a random Zippy quote on the status line. Here’s the code.

1 Zippy haunting my emacs config

* All's Well That Ends Well, YOW !!!
Because, well, you've got to be able to M-x psychoanalyze-pinhead
to fill a buffer and pass the time....

Discussion of the demise of zippy in Emacs here:

You'll need a copy of the zippy quotes. I pulled from here LONG ago..
   https://github.com/shentonfreude/dot-emacs/blob/master/yow.lines

#+BEGIN_SRC emacs-lisp :exports code
  (message "init.el finished. Yow !")
  (setq yow-file "~/.emacs.d/etc/yow.lines")
  (global-set-key "\ey" 'yow) ; my ANCIENT keybinding

;; This function gives me a zippy quote on the status line after
;; everything else in the config has settled down.
  ;; I'm sure there are better/cleaner ways...
  (defun display-yow-in-status-line ()
"Display the result of yow in the status line once after 1 second of idle time."
    (interactive)
    (run-with-idle-timer 1 nil
                         (lambda ()
                           (let ((yow-output (yow)))
                             (message "%s" yow-output)))))
  (display-yow-in-status-line)

  #+END_SRC

2 psychoanalyze-pinhead

There also used to be “M-x psychoanalyze-pinhead” where you could endlessly fill a buffer with Rogerian analysis of zippy quotes: https://www.elsewhere.org/journal/archives/2001/10/07/psychoanalyze-pinhead/ I mean, who needs LLMs when you can watch a live analysis session of Zippy. There are some issues that keep the original code from working in modern Emacsen, and I meant to fixed them in time for this Emacs Carnival post, but didn’t quite get there.

There was also “M-x psychoanalyze-flammer” which analyzed a stream of inflammatory insults.

3 The new traditionalists

My startup fragment above shows how to pull the original, non-free zippy quotes. If you are a purist and don’t mind using some AI-generated quotes, here are some you might try.

YOW!

Give me 60 new quotes in the style of Zippy the Pinhead with more current cultural and historical references. 20 should be in classic zippy style 20 should should have a Mark-twain flavor 20 should have a kafka-esque twist. Separate them into sections, and maybe prefix things like “zippy sez:”, “Mark Twain Zippyism:” or similar.

3.1 Classic Zippy

3.2 Mark Twain Flavor

3.3 Kafka-esque Twist

And remember, “Everybody gets free BORSCHT!”. YOW!
